Other Information about the IRS Large Dollar Unit.

The IRS Large Dollar Unit is divided into two main divisions.  One division is focused on Business / Self Employed taxpayers.  This division is mainly located in Brookhaven or Holtsville NY.  If you own a business, are self employed or report any income on a Schedule C your case will generally be handled in Brookhaven.    The other division of the Large Dollar Unit is for wage & income taxpayers.  This division is mainly located in Buffalo, NY and concentrates on taxpayers who generally earn income as employees or W-2 wage earners.

The IRS Large Dollar Unit only handles personal tax debt cases – this is mostly for personal 1040 tax returns but also can include Trust Fund Civil Penalty Assessments or other personal taxes owed.  Business taxes, such as 940/941 payroll taxes will generally be assigned to an IRS Revenue Officer if the amount owed is greater than $10,000 and it cannot be paid in full in less than 60-days. IRS Revenue Officers will also generally be assigned to personal tax cases that involve several years of unfiled tax returns and will always be assigned if the tax debt is greater than $1 million dollars.
